China, BRICS, and Institutional Transformation in the Global Economic Order

Article introduction
This article examines China’s role in BRICS and its impact on the transformation of the global economic order. Using a descriptive–analytical and qualitative approach, it analyzes China’s performance within BRICS and BRICS-Plus between 2009 and 2020.
The findings show that through institutional initiatives and independent projects within the BRICS framework, China has strengthened its position in the international economic order and, as an emerging economic power, seeks future hegemonic status in this domain. The study emphasizes that institutionalization in BRICS has largely proceeded along China’s economic–political priorities, facing minimal resistance. Through financial, trade, and development cooperation, BRICS strives to consolidate its standing against the Western liberal order.
The article argues that China has used BRICS to advance its regional and international interests and, as the group’s real engine, manages asymmetric power relations among members and other states.
