From BRICS to BRICS plus: selecting promising areas of S&T Cooperation with developing countries

This article explores the expansion of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) into broader international cooperation with developing countries, conceptualized as “BRICS Plus.” Focusing on science and technology (S&T) as a key driver of economic growth, the study examines how collaboration in high-tech research, which requires significant infrastructure, skilled labor, and financial resources, can strengthen socioeconomic development across the Global South.
The authors identify 21 developing countries as part of the BRICS Plus group based on criteria such as population, economic potential, R&D capacities, and research output. Using bibliometric analysis of publication activities and international collaboration patterns, the study highlights promising areas for joint research and innovation. Special attention is given to 14 thematic fields in S&T and innovation that are considered priorities for coordinated development among BRICS countries.
The paper argues that fostering collaboration in these areas can optimize resource use, enhance global research impact, and support sustainable technological advancement. By systematically identifying common interests and strategic opportunities, the study provides a roadmap for BRICS nations to expand scientific cooperation, strengthen partnerships with developing countries, and collectively address challenges in global research and innovation landscapes.
