International Development Assistance and the BRICS explores how Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are redefining the global landscape of development assistance. As emerging powers representing nearly 40% of the world’s population and over one-fifth of global GDP, the BRICS countries are increasingly influential in shaping new models of international cooperation. The book examines how their evolving partnership—from its early informal stages to its now institutionalized annual summits—has contributed to a global shift toward a more multipolar development architecture.
Through contributions from scholars based across the BRICS nations, the volume investigates the motivations, strategies, and ideological foundations underlying BRICS development assistance. It questions whether BRICS cooperation represents a departure from traditional Western aid frameworks or a hybrid model blending old and new practices. Several chapters analyze how BRICS countries position themselves within global development narratives, assess the coherence of their development models, and evaluate the implications of their assistance for the Global South.
A significant portion of the book addresses the role of major BRICS-created financial institutions—particularly the New Development Bank (NDB)—and compares them with existing institutions such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Bretton Woods system.
